Urban Bites Newtown: A menu that’s Ecclectic or Schizophrenic?

The menu of this place almost mirrors a diverse history of the area with an assembly of Italian, Mediterranean, Malaysian and modern Australian dishes.   It was interesting to tie all these dishes together in one meal taking the taste buds on a sensory rollercoaster.

Classic Burrata cheese salad with beetroot puree $13.90

There’s nothing like opening a meal with the clashing textures of a soft burrata shell oozing out its centre as you slice it right down the middle.   It’s heavenly buttery smooth freshness was not overdressed but simply brought to life with the beetroot hues and cucumber rings.

250g Scotch Fillet Steak, Cauliflower puree, steamed greens, chips and gravy $22

This is the dish that has become the baseline in rating portion size, value and accompaniments.   Medium-Rare cook and yet another dish that lets the focus of the dish take centre stage with delicate accenting here with cauliflower and in the previous dish, beetroot.  In abstract sense trying to typecast the menu into a cuisine, you see the Chef’s style in basic landscape plating.

UFC Main – Crispy Chicken Wings & Drummettes, beer battered chips, ketchup, salad of iceberg lettuce, kale, cabbage, orange, adamame, baby radish – $16

It’s a struggle to reconcile the menu description which is quoted word for word with the ratio of sides to the actual protein when for an extra $2 you could have gotten yourself a Wagyu Burger or for $5 less half a head of cauliflower (pictured below respectively) .

Crunch Cauliflower $11

There’s a cajun like spice dusting the cauliflower which is lightly coated creating that crunch and rejuvenating the distant nut flavor in the typically bland vegetable.  The accompanying moroccon pumpkin acts as a great dipping sauce however each element successfully stands alone well as their own side dish.

Lunch Special of the Day – Nasi Goreng $15.90
If you’re linear thinking it will be hard for you to get your hand around what to expect, but essentially, you can divide the menu up into staple breakfast items of benedict, pancakes, avo smash and varieties of eggs, bacon and toast.  Lunch overs chicken, beef, sandwiches and burgers while dinner expands on that with grills and bakes.   What keeps things interesting are the rolling daily specials like this one.

Indoor seated booths in a homely setting, while the outside large place in the sunshine works for a large group get together.

The allure to this place might be in its adaption to the widely diverse palette of the modern Newtown and inner west urbanite and also the chaotic wonder on what that daily special for lunch of dinner might be.
