A cute little hole-in-the-wall situation on the new laneway at Darling Square that opened up a month ago, it’s an express rendition of Rey’s Place in Darlinghurst.
Unlike it’s big brother, Rey Junior is tucked in Little Hay Street – the laneway that takes you straight from Chinatown to Darling Square. Open just a month, it’s great spot for surrounding locals, working commuters and students with its express service of street style snacks and rice bowls featuring some highlights in Filipino Cuisine. 4 inside stools and two tables outside for small groups – its for those on the go.
BICOL EXPRESS: It’s similar in texture and taste to a thai curry with the base made from coconut milk, shrimp paste, onion and garlic. It’s named after a region of the Philippines but more so after a commuter service that ran from Manila to Bicol which became renowned for its spicy food. Served with chicken you can choose the level of chili in this.
CLASSIC STREET EATS: Great quick bites on the go – 6 pork spring rolls (above) and charred corn cob (below). Simple but perfect for the summer without the heaviness of a bowl.
CHICHARON: Another hawker style item that’s derived from the country’s spanish history, it’s typically done with pork rind – pork crackling chips if you like. Rey Junior does it with Chicken skin, accompanied with a soy based vinaigrette with cucumber and spanish onion.
LECHON is what Rey’s is famous for and this mini rice bowl does a great compact version which captures the essence of their signature.
SNACKS are all $7 and rice bowls MAINS sit around the $16-$16 mark with rotating seasonal specials. It’s also licensed. Open until 9pm weeknights and late afternoon weekends.
