Sydney’s newest theatre opened its doors last night with a premiere performance by David Campbell and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra with Christmas at the Coliseum. The 2,000-strong audience was treated to an evening of crooning, carols, and opening night gags – “this will be the last song at the first ever show at the Coliseum”, by way of introducing his closing number, Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You”.
The $100 million state-of-the-art, multi-purpose venue sets a new standard in live entertainment venues in Sydney, and is a welcome addition to Western Sydney’s cultural landscape.
David Campbell and the SSO perform one more show tonight, and Sydney Coliseum Theatre will play host this week to Tina Arena, Dame Edna and John Butler, ahead of the official opening show by country music superstar Kith Urban on 21 December. Book tickets through Ticketek.
