Beauty Basics for the Mardi Gras Drag Queen

Home » Beauty Basics for the Mardi Gras Drag Queen

We’re fast approaching Sydney Mardi Gras season with all its glitz and glammer.  Drag is associated with the camp style from the 1970s and is described as theatrical and extravagant. It’s a real mix between art and fashion. But what is the appeal? The everyday and the on-stage personas of a drag queen are so different that you begin to wonder how they achieve this amazing transformation.

Skincare

The makeup techniques that drag queens use are not too different than what we are used to in everyday life.  The majority of drag impersonators are male although there are also female queens.   Things to think about when formulating a beauty regime for the most effective drag look.

THICKNESS

In comparison to women, male skin is 25% thicker, it thins gradually with age while a woman’s remains constant until the enter menopause.

COLLAGEN

Men have a higher collagen density than women. Because of this naturally occurring collagen density difference, it is more common for women to show premature age signs faster than men even though they are of the same age.

SEBUM

Men have larger pores and produce more sebum.  Problem-prone skin such as breakouts, clogged pores, blackheads and as well as seborrheic dermatitis cases can be more exacerbated and last longer in male skin due to higher sebum levels. unlike women, for male skin the sebum production remains the same throughout their life and does not decrease with age.

TEXTURE

Male skin texture is tougher and rougher because of a thicker stratum corneum.  This is also the cause to the difference in facial wrinkling that develops over the years, where men are prone to developing deeper facial wrinkles also associated with subcutaneous fat loss.

FACIAL HAIR

Regular shaving stresses male facial skin and this can lead to more sensitive, easily irritated skin.  shaving can lead to cuts, razor burns (folliculitis), ingrown hairs (pseudofolliculitis barbae) as well as over-expose the skin to external influences as it clears off microscopic pieces of dead skin and also because of a weakened skin barrier function.

For men who wear makeup daily, it’s essential to wash your face thoroughly to maintain good skin condition, avoiding break-outs.

Makeup

When it comes to the makeup, the features are vastly exaggerated.

  • The foundation is almost white in order to create a blank canvas to re-create a female face.
  • Next step is usually shaping the eye brows – they can look natural or not so natural, but usually placed much higher than normally.
  • The cheekbones are extremely high – use a very pigmented bright, gold or pink, highlighter.
  • To create this illusion, apply deep shadows under the cheekbone using much darker than your skin tone brown contour.
  • A must-have for drag makeup? Long, thick FAKE eye lashes!
