In these modern times of social equality, what are the rules and tips on dating? Who pays on a first date?

According to Decibel research commissioned by Raiz Invest, their survey of a thousand Gen Y and Z respondents seem to suggest that lads in the 18-36 year old group tend to spend more on a date.  It found:

Men spend 30% more than women
on a first date ($107)

Men are 4 times more likely
to pay the whole bill

The ladies surveyed tend to prefer a more egalitarian approach with more than half agreeing costs should be split on the first date, but it’s the lads who are insisting they pick up the entire bill and both sides are happy to.  Just 39% of guys are happy to pick up the tab.

But why?

25% of men and women agree in this survey that they’re more likely to ‘go home together’ if the other person pays;

47% wouldn’t go on a second date if there wasn’t an offer to split the bill in the first one, while 20% wouldn’t go on a second date if their date came across cheap

Men spend more ($81) getting ready for a date than women ($64) do.

The findings also smash age old myths
that women spend more than men when it comes to getting ready for a date

The investment for men into forming new relationships with the love of the future love of their life doesn’t stop there – they seem to be the ones opting in to premium versions and upgrades of the dating apps they use (37% in comparison to 17% of women).  It’s a huge indicator to what today’s man finds important as they seem to be spending more on a date and relationships than on a night out with the lads.

Money isn’t everything, but everything is money

Men and women are keen to invest in their relationships.  75% say that it costs more to be in one than being single, 20% resign themselves to the fact of not having enough money to spend on themselves when in one, and 46% let the ship sail and forfeit a date because of their financial situation.

“Dating can be a costly exercise,” says Queenie Ling, Marketing Communications Lead at Raiz Invest. “To help young singles indulge in the dating experience, an app like Raiz can be really helpful through its round ups and My Finance features to automatically save in the background of life, which is important when it comes to living a fulfilled life.”
