In the lead up to International Women’s Day, Margaux Parker from Triple M’s Big Breakfast with Marto, Margaux and Nick Cody lifted the veil on a growing trend of women paving the way in the construction industry. Visiting a worksite in Brisbane yesterday, with all female tradies, Margaux said she was thrilled to see that there were positive pathways to women wanting to succeed in the traditionally male-dominated industry.
“Whilst women still only make up a small percentage of people in the construction field, its great to see that groups like the National Association of Women in Construction and businesses such as Eve Renovations working to encourage young women to take up apprenticeships. When I was in school, girls who were interested in trades were usually encouraged to pursue fields like hairdressing or administration and whilst these are extremely worthwhile careers I’m so glad that girls now have the opportunity to branch out into other fields if they wish”, she said.
Co-founder of all-women construction company, Eve Renovations, Laura Madden said it was great that Triple M was putting a focus on female tradies, “We have certainly seen some positive changes in the industry since we first started 10 years ago and social media has really helped boost the number of women interested in the construction field. Women now see female tradies on social media and they think “If she can do it then I can do it”. Having said that, we still do face scepticism from some elements of the industry with people often assuming we are picking up building supplies on behalf of our husbands or fathers.’
