Inspired by the book, On Her Own Ground written by Walker’s great-great-granddaughter A’Lelia Bundles, the Netflix original series, SELF MADE: INSPIRED BY THE LIFE OF MADAM C.J. WALKER brings the uplifting story of this cultural icon to the screen for the first time.

Against all odds, Walker overcame post-slavery racial and gender biases, personal betrayals, and business rivalries to build a ground-breaking brand that revolutionized black haircare, as she simultaneously fought for social change.

The four-part limited series also stars Blair Underwood as her husband C.J. Walker, Tiffany Haddish as her daughter Leila, Carmen Ejogo as Walker’s business rival Addie Monroe, Garrett Morris as Walker’s father-in-law, Kevin Carroll as her longtime lawyer Ransom and Bill Bellamy as Ransom’s cousin Sweetness.

There’s been mixed reviews on the narrative’s embellishment of creative liberties to the non bio-pic of an actual historical figure, but the script and the period’s setting provided many moments for Octavia to shine.

Episode 2 is the point of no return as the drive for entrepreneurship becomes not only a batlle for racial equality but gender equality too as her only way to get the attention of African-American business investors is through the influential activist, Booker T. Washington:

“Now my factory will create jobs…. and opportunity for our people, especially our women. Look at your wives. Look at ’em. Arent they gorgeous? But they are so much more. Learned, political, brilliant and they are wasting their talents in the back. Help me give them opportunities that will benefit your whole family. Female enterprise is good for us all. It’s the way of the future. I can see it clear as day. This is how you can truly uplift the race.”
