Star Trek: Picard - New frontiers engaged

A quick 101 for new fans.

No, you don’t necessarily have to have watched The Next Generation to enjoy Picard:

It’s been 26 years since Star Trek: The Next Generation. Jean Luc Picard is unique to his successors who captained the missions of Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise, Discovery and Short Treks.

The only TV show character to have jumped onto the big screen when blockbuster Star Trek: Generations brought original frontrunner Captain Kirk together Captain Picard, and more recently in Star Trek: Nemesis 18 years ago.

There’s a fondness for Picard that supersedes all other past and current series, and this story continues on from Nemesis but is not essential viewing for casual fans. If you’re not a trekkie, listen very carefully because it’s very fact intensive in some spots to fully understand the story.

The show does well to focus on themes that parallel modern society while strategically placing cameos of original Star Trek: Next Generation cast members allowing long time viewers some closure to beloved characters laid dormant for almost two decades. Riker & Troi now have a daughter named Kestra and much of the mystery in the main story arc revolves around the daughters of Data.

Season 1 is unlike any other of the Star Trek series playing more on the emotional character development and straying away from the clinical formats and interactions of other shows. As a result as we are introduced to new worlds, by the end of the season, a new team of unlikely crew members are assembled with many stories that pique our interest calling for another season.

There’s an update to the storytelling which strays from it’s childlike humour taking a more assertive tone with a generous rationing of action sequences increasing dramatic tension and putting this show in line with today’s many Marvel & DC Comic superheroes.
