Just as its address eludes to, no one can walk through the side street alley of Steam Mill Lane and escape the clutches of the seductive temptresses you must pass to get to Darling Drive. Even the barber at Mens Culture is too good to resist.
The menu is in display both in print and in a live (that’s right actual dishes not Sampuru wax replicas) ready to eat display.
Speaking of Sampuru – was reading up on this and didn’t actually realise many of the displays you see at Japanese restaurants who present their menus this way are made of wax not plastic.
It’s a tradition that began about a century ago before colour photography and often costs more to make than the actual dishes they are trying to sell. Apparently it’s worth a multi billion dollar industry.
Pictured above is next on the to do list – the most expensive item on their current lockdown menu – The Wagyu Bento Box.
That’s not to say the Karaage Chicken Bento wasn’t good, it is referred to as famous on their menu. A quick scan of the box…
Not a fan of the coleslaw’s dressing which has a slight tang but power through it anyway as it cuts through the grease of the chicken’s coating adding some crunch.
No not mushroom – it’s tempura octopus – a pleasant surprise.
Japanese mayo goes with everything wiping the tempura pickles and even the rice through it. The dolop is big enough for that as well as the juicy pieces of chicken that hero the bento setup.
Have never been a fan of Udon but the Mentai roe it’s bathed in with squiggles of thinly sliced pork belly are a match made in heaven opening an understanding to its popularity finally.
Despite the long queues, the wait is short and the socially distancing in this narrow lane very well choreographed by the workers, locals and passers by.
