I have a small problem.  Well, not so much of a problem as a preference…

One time, about six years ago, I had an emo phase that I never really outgrew. Around the time I realised that My Chemical Romance was not going to release new songs, I started to realise that I was actually missing out on new, mainstream songs. If you’re like me in this aspect, you probably hate missing out.

That being said, I didn’t enjoy mainstream music that much either.  I still don’t.  I did, however, stumble across a loophole: rock covers of mainstream pop songs.

The Weeknd – Blinding Lights cover by Twenty One Two

Twenty One Two is a Swedish rock duo that has been around since 2013. Consisting of drummer Rickard Lindvall and singer/guitarist Mikael Olsson, Twenty One Two is most known for covering pop songs and putting their unique rock twist on it. Their cover of Blinding Lights is especially ear catching; they transform the song we know and love into something much more. You can stream this song on all of your favorite platforms.

Justin Bieber – Intentions cover by Our Last Night

Our Last Night is a post-hardcore band hailing from New Hampshire, United States. Formed in 2004, Our Last Night consists of brothers Matthew and Trevor Wentworth, Alex Woodrow and Timothy Molloy. Our Last Night’s cover of Intentions is simply blissful. You don’t have to wait for this song to get good, it starts off with a bang right from the beginning and is guaranteed to reel you in the more you listen to it.

The Wanted – Glad You Came cover by We Came As Romans

Formed in 2005, We Came As Romans is an American metalcore band from Michigan, United States. This song is a bit of a throwback, but this cover is delightfully refreshing. We Came As Romans did much more than simply covering this song; they made it their own.

Arizona Zervas – ROXANNE cover by Fame on Fire

Formed in 2013, Fame on Fire has evolved beyond the point that they started from. The roots of their origin grew from a humble solo drum cover project to a fully formed rock band. Their cover of ROXANNE packs the perfect rock punch, hitting all the right notes.

Dua Lipa – Physical cover by Pros & iCons

Pros & iCons deserves so much more attention. Drawing inspiration from the 80s, 2006 emo rock, hip-hop and much more, the four piece band never fails to surprise me.  I was not prepared for their cover of Physical. Pros & iCons holds nothing back in this song. In fact, it’s not just a song- it’s an experience
