Melbourne based Singer/Songwriter/Producer Rhys Tolhurst released his new single ‘Keep Dreaming’ last week and there’s a noticeable calm maturity – like a fine wine that comes of age – in his new sound since his last singles ‘Paradise’ and ‘Traitor’.
He’s always been good, but he naturally captures the sentiment of the moment as people are bound to come away with their own inspiration from the lyrics in this latest instalment.. Those vocal textures he has still move us, but since ‘Traitor’– there’s a mellow suave that notably comes through in his sound. Could that have something to do with his new found love with fellow artist Kellie whom he met whilst a judge on Channel 7’s ‘All Together Now’?

A late bloomer by musical standards, Cairns native Rhys Tolhurst went from bedroom crooner to teenage prodigy almost overnight and qualified as a finalist on ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ within two years of singing seriously on the public stage. The rapid nature of that initial rise was quickly replicated however when Tolhurst suddenly sacrificed a lucrative local career in pursuit of bigger dreams when moving to Australia’s musical capital, Melbourne.
Shedding the title of teenage star was part of a critical evolution for Tolhurst who longed for legitimacy and knew that the trouble-laden road of singer-songwriter would service his soul in ways that hollow adulation could not.
In many ways, Rhys’ latest release ‘Keep Dreaming’ chronicles his challenging voyage from talented whiz kid to wisdom-seeking wanderer. It also ponders upon and pays tribute to the commitment required from partners of all ambitious artists as they chase their elusive and often monumental dreams.
“This song is about two things; the blind, fatalistic belief of every gifted artist that their voice is worthy of being heard and the faith required from those nearest and dearest to fuel and foster that belief.”
Anthemic in nature but subtle in tone, Keep Dreaming takes us on a musical mystery tour while reminding us that success is impossible without sacrifice and that sacrifice, meaningful sacrifice, is almost always a rare and shared experience.
