Pair idyllic wineries and epicurean delights with heritage streetscapes and boutique shops, and you have the charming country town of Mudgee, reachable by short flight or a 3.5 hour drive northwest of Sydney.
Begin your exploration on the cobblestoned corner of the city at Alby & Esthers, housed in a nineteenth century stone terrace emanating Mudgee’s character and charm as you charge up with a coffee and snack on mouth-watering menu bites showcasing local ingredients.
As you stroll along the pretty tree-lined streets admiring colonial architecture, including the 1862 built Mudgee Post Office. Draw inspiration in home style at Perfectly Sorted, arts and crafts at Whatever Mudgee before immersing in local fashions of Edited & Co and Cherry Red.
After taking in the streetscapes, and the culinary delights, for me it’s all about the local wineries:
The tasting room over at Logan Wines is hugged by panoramic views of the Apple Tree Flat vineyard and ranges encased in floor to ceiling glass.
If the technical innovations and small batch biodynamic wines are more for you, a tour of Lowe Wines will give you insight into the modern sustainable management practices on the vineyard and farm. Zin House restaurant situated in-house allows guest to make a day of it.
Steeped in a multigenerational lineage of winegrowing, Robert Stein Winery basks in accolades of award-winning reds, whites and fortified wines.
Within the grounds, Chef and owner of The Pipeclay Pumphouse manifests local farm grown produce into its fine dining creations.
Country evenings are nothing like the city as Mudgee continues to offer more options after sunset.
If you’re making a weekend of wine tours, perhaps cap the night off at Burnbrae Wines before retreating to their picturesque boutique accommodations. – The Winemakers Cottage and Varykino House.
Hearty meals, live music and events add to the unique craft beers on offer from the microbrewery, Mudgee Brewing Co.
For astronomy lovers, Mudgee Observatory is one of the best places in the state to stargaze with an uninterrupted view to the cosmos.
As the evening winds down, spend the night at one of many unique accommodation options including luxury self-contained apartments at Perry Street Hotel or premier or award-winning glamping experiences at Sierra Escape.
