Magnify Festival: Exploring Blacktown’s Art Scene

Blacktown Arts is a recognised leader in the development of contemporary arts in Australia, presenting an award-winning curated program of exhibitions, performances, workshops, residencies and events. The organisation is committed to exploring dynamic, culturally diverse work that reflects Blacktown, its history and its communities. Blacktown Arts places Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and communities at the heart of its program to develop new work drawing on issues of local and global significance. The Leo Kelly Blacktown Arts Centre is an initiative of Blacktown City Council and is supported by the NSW Government through Create NSW.

Experience the rich artistic talent within Blacktown in a brand new way this August and September with the premiere of Magnify festival.  Reaching from The Ponds in the north to Dawson Mall in the west, Magnify will activate sites across Blacktown with music, theatre, dance, film and installations. Local artists and communities will share stories of the region through 8 new creative experiences in intimate and distinct settings.

Sizzling Fillo’s Chef Nina Cruz teams up with Chef Pierre Lucente showcasing the Spanish history of Filipino cuisine


Arguably one of the Queens of Western Sydney specialising in the boodle feast and classic Filipino dishes, the recent pop-up at Sizzling Fillo held by the Filipino Food Movement (FFMA) saw Chef Nina Cruz step out of her comfort zone telling a new culinary story of her native country’s cuisine.

The FFMA monthly gathering “Mabuhay Nights” is open to all with ticketed events hosted at a new restaurant each month.  You can join chefs, local businesses and food lovers experiencing the vision that calls on each host Chef to recreate and modernise homeland dishes.

New Western Sydney trail promises fun for families and serious runners!

Screen Shot 2019-04-16 at 12.20.33 PMWhether you’re an experienced runner who clocks up the kilometres on a weekly basis or a mum to young ones keen to introduce them to the joys of outdoor fun – get ready for Western Sydney Parklands Trail Run, a brand new outdoor event for runners of all ages and experiences.

Taking place in the spectacular Western Sydney Parklands – Sydney’s Biggest Backyard on Saturday 22 June, 2019, the inaugural event offers up four course distances: 35km, 19km, 11km and a 4km Family Fun Run. There’s also a 1.6km Kids Dash for youngsters who are fresh to the running scene.

We’re thrilled to give competitors a taste of the beauty and diversity of our parklands. With more than 60 kilometres of tracks and trails, spanning over 5000 hectares from Blacktown in the north to Liverpool in the South,  Sydney’s Biggest Backyard offers a unique range of challenging terrain, combined with breath-taking views, natural bushland settings, award winning playgrounds and picnic facilities”,  said Suellen Fitzgerald, Executive Director of Western Sydney Parklands.

Burger Point Spaghetti: Hit or Miss?

The promise of their epic burgers led me to face a childhood cringe factor.  The modernisation of their desserts with hints of filipino flavours have found mainstream appeal.

Was never a fan of filipino style spaghetti – there’s a sweetness to the sauce and the pasta is commonly not al dente.   They’ve stayed true to that cultural style in their non-burger dish which is accompanied with chicken coated in a spicy batter – this is what saves the dish  – subjectively speaking.

There are better ways to spend $18 here and other places and it would be the gourmet burgers and desserts I would come back for.

Sydney’s West the winner of sporting collaboration

Screen Shot 2019-03-15 at 5.58.48 PMIt isn’t often that different sports cross-promote, however in a first for NSW, the Australian Turf Club (ATC), AFL club GWS Giants and NRL club Wests Tigers have united to promote a new tourism product for Sydney’s West, called The Ultimate Weekend.

Spearheaded by Western Sydney Business Connection (WSBC) and funded by the NSW Government via its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW, the campaign is aimed at promoting Sydney’s West as a destination for fun, families, entertainment and sport.

With Longines Golden Slipper Day at Rosehill Gardens on 23 March and then GWS Giants playing Essendon Bombers at Sydney Showground Stadium, as well as Wests Tigers playing the New Zealand Warriors at Campbelltown Stadium on 24 March, the stage was set for an innovative collaboration to join forces and pool marketing resources.
