It’s official: Neo set to return in Matrix 4

What a surprise we got when badgering our sources for hints on the possible hits set to send shockwaves in 2021 cinema!   Scanning through the release dates of upcoming films from Warner Bros. is a fourth installment of The Matrix which celebrated it’s 20th Anniversary earlier this year.  Is it final?  That’s yet to be seen as it’s also the same date John Wicks 4 is set to be released, so while the green light has been given to release the film shot earlier this year, it wouldn’t make sense to be having the same star in competing films at the box office.

The writing was ahead of its time redefining action genres with it’s challenging ideas of reality.  The only film that has ever come close with as a provocative plot is Inception starring Leonardo Di Caprio and maybe further down the list, Jake Gyllenhaal’s Source Code.

Not only did The Matrix push the boundaries of technological advances of cinematography at the time, it managed to consolidate concepts of religion, philosophy and technology while also challenging the imagination of science fiction.

There’s no sign of Laurence Fishburne’s Morpheus in the cast announced, but alongside Keanu Reeves returns Trinity (Carrie Ann Moss) who died in Revolutions.  New additions to the cast include Neil Patrick Harris (How I met your mother), Jessica Henwick (Game of Thrones / Iron Fist), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman) and Jonathan Groff (Mindhunter).

There’s also no sign of Hugo Weaving’s infamous Agent character either.  There’s alot of expectations and a high bar to surpass with the first film leaving quite an impression on the cinematic landscape.   Technology has evolved tremendously since the second film and the risk here with reviving another 1990s hit and ending up like Terminator’s recent Hamilton-Schwarzenegger Dark Fate reunion that divided critics.
