There is no shortage of interest in these bit size custard puffs, but the question that comes to mind based on the name of the store is – are these treats derived from some kind of ancient emperor’s recipe?

While sugar was introduced in China 3000 years ago, bringing forth the less milky and starchy sweets and desserts that survive today, custard doesn’t seem to have appeared until the early 20th century when it was brought to the east by the British.

Even in the rain despite much of Paddy’s Markets and the main strip in between the dragons being all but deserted, the queue that forms annoys the neighbouring restaurant who asks customers to move away from their entrance.
