Jen (Christina Applegate), Judy (Linda Cardellini) and the lies that entwine them are back. Picking up in the aftermath of that bloody backyard reveal, the irrepressible pair once again struggle to keep their secrets buried. With a surprising new visitor in town and Detective Perez (Diana Maria Riva) hot on their heels, Jen and Judy take drastic measures to protect their loved ones and each other — no matter the cost.
Starting tonight, if the wait has been killing you, here are some mega spoilers into the new season ahead of your weekend binge:
1. James Marsden returns but not in flashbacks!
Ben did die in Season 1 so there are no surprise twists or Days of Our Lives like returns from the ashes as the writers introduce his twin brother, Ben who seems to be more likeable and the complete opposite of the ruthless business tyrant we love to hate.
2. Karen has surveillance footage from the night of the murder!
Remember that annoying neighbour from the first episode of season one who would pop up and again recurrently? Yep she’s back and the CCTV she has installed at her house caught Ben arriving but not leaving Jen’s house… It’s a ticking time bomb just waiting to go off!!! We find ourselves sympathising with her after Jen and Judy bump into her husband….. with his gay lover!
3. Steve was laundering money for the Greek mafia
For half the season, Steve’s body is kept in Jen’s freezer providing some comical moments. Jen finds grief stricken Judy sleeping next to the freezer and believes Steve’s spirit is haunting them leading to a comical climax opening the third episode when an explanation is given to the rustling coming from the it.
4. Jen changes her will and makes Lorna legal guardian of the kids should anything happen to her
They may not see eye to eye but there’s a ferocity and devotion of family Jen can rely on when it comes to her mother in law….
5. New patient moves into Abe’s room
A new grandmother and daughter are introduced onto the canvas moving into Abe’s old room. Judy instantly connects with this woman who by the seventh episode, turns out to be Detective Perez’s ex-girlfriend and Judy’s new love interest! Didn’t see that coming!
Stream it or skip it?
The stage is set for Season 3 with the season over in a blink of an eye and though in some places the script is predictable there are moments of surprise that shed new light on these two endearing characters brought together by dark circumstances.
Christina Applegate (Jen) maintains a strong performance channelling her opposition from Bad Moms alongside Linda Cardellini (Judy) finding comedic moments in their harsh reality with great chemistry. James Marsden brings a very well thought out character and believable performances as Ben, completely making us forget about the ruthless corporate mogul Steve.
Rating highly on the bingeworthiness, there’s still room for another season of story to pique our interest without feeling forced, particularly with that ending that harks back to the season 1 catalyst and the loose ends we still need answers to with the extended family members of the Wood family.
